The John Betjeman Young People's Poetry Competition

Schools will be interested to learn about the John Betjeman Young People's Poetry Competition, for which entries are currently being accepted, right through until a closing date of 31 July. Established to promote a love of poetry among children, the competition is open to all 11 to 14 year-olds. Entrants are limited to one poem each about their local surroundings or any aspect thereof, whether it be a house, a street, a garden, a park, a city or a wider landscape. The spirit behind the competition is to encourage young people to understand and appreciate the importance of place. The first prize is £1,000 (£500 to the winner and £500 to the English department of her/his school). The first prize winner, runner-up and highly commended entrants will also each win £50 of book tokens, whilst commended winners will receive books.

Full details of - and an entry form for - the competition can be found online at: www.betjemanpoetrycompetition.com/pages/2010-competition/submit-entry.asp
Alternatively, hard copy entries (also listing the details requested on the website) can be sent to 'The John Betjeman Young People's Poetry Competition', c/o Justin Gowers, 72 Vicars Hill, London, SE13 7JL. Please note that competition rules state that one entry form per class of pupils will be accepted with a teacher's signature required as a guarantee that the poems are the original work of the entrants.

The prize-winners will be announced in early September, and a free-to-attend prize-giving and afternoon tea party - 'Trains and Buttered Toast' - to be held at St Pancras International station on Tuesday 5 October. The competition organisers are delighted to announce that Ian McMillan has accepted an invitation to be the guest of honour for the event, to read poetry and present the prizes to the category winners. He will be joined on stage by Laura Dockrill. Attendance at the event is by invitation only - and school parties would be particularly welcomed. For further information, please contact Justin Gowers at info@betjemanpoetrycompetition.com
