Take us back 2 or 3 years and a visit to Arbery Arcade left a little to be desired, with just a handful of shops and more empty or half finished units it wasn’t exactly the destination it is today.

Fast forward to 2019 and the arcade is now thriving with 13 shops or small businesses buzzing away on a daily basis.

We have the longest standing shop in the arcade situated facing onto the road at Church street end, Arbery Emporium, which has become a firm favourite in the community over the years. In part down to their fantastically up cycled furniture and other crafty bits and pieces but also down to the ever changing stock and warm friendly welcome you get whenever you pay them a visit. The same applies to Bold antiques situated dead opposite (you won’t miss all the quirky bits and bobs they have sat outside in the arcade).

They were followed shortly after by M&A Electricals, a lighting specialist with a personal touch. Peter at M&A’s makes and refashions many of the lamps you’ll find on sale.

You would be forgiven for forgetting where you are on a slow wonder down the arcade, many customers commenting that it’s like a visit to the backstreet shops of your favourite seaside town but without the sea air, particularly on a warm summer day you can really soak up the friendly atmosphere.

With shops such as a vintage music & record shop, a glass specialist, a children’s toys & clothing shop and Phoenix the healing hub offering treatments as well as crystals & more there really is something for everyone.

The addition of Bisoux Jewellery & Accessories in early 2018 was a perfect addition to the existing gorgeous little gift shop violet Jean, between them and the brand new dress agency ‘Looking Fabulous’ they really do have you covered for looking great, treating yourself or if you’re looking for that perfect gift.

“Bisoux have been specialising in ladies fashion jewellery and accessories since 2012 and over the years we’ve always enjoyed working in and around Wantage. That’s why, when deciding to open our first shop, Wantage was the obvious location for us. It’s always had a lovely welcoming vibe and we’re very excited to be part of a growing range of fantastic independent shops and small businesses in this lovely, lively little market town.” Lisa at Bisoux

Meryn is a little different in that their shop doubles up as a workshop, Beth at Meryn spends her day making fine leather custom belts and other leather items so you can see her at work while you browse some of the pre made examples of her work.

If you’re a visitor to Wantage or a local resident be it old or new then there is something for everyone down Arbery Arcade, whether a haircut from Wantage’s  favourite barber at Clark’s barbershop, or a browse around one of the many little local shops we’re sure you won’t be disappointed. They even have their own resident seamstress
