Residents at a care home in Wantage were treated to a close-up look at a Williams Formula 1 car at celebrations to mark the home’s official opening

Families and special guests who attended the event at Elmbrook Court on Grove Road were also treated to entertainment from the Wantage Silver Band and the Hendred Ukulele Group (HUG). The home is run by Oakland Care and offers all-inclusive residential, nursing, memory and respite care for up to 74 residents.

The opening ceremony was performed by Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, Colonel (Retired) Neil Sutherland OBE DL who cut a ceremonial ribbon to officially open the home with Oakland CEO, Joanne Balmer, and residents Des and Dylis McMullin, who were the first to move in. Bashir Jamal, Commissioning Manager at Elmbrook Court, said it was an important event for the home’s community.

“We are delighted to formally open the home and we are hugely grateful to the Deputy Lieutenant for joining us on this special day. We’ve only been open a matter of weeks but already we are an established part of the community and it was wonderful to welcome so many members into our grounds. We look forward to more local people making Elmbrook Court their home.”

Elmbrook Court welcomed its first residents in May and now has more than 17 people living at the purpose-built site. It has created 50 jobs for the local area and when the home is full, staff numbers will reach 100. The event was organised with full COVID-safety measures in place for the 76 guests which included the Mayor of Wantage, Councillor Major Jim Sibbald.

Guests, who had a confirmed negative lateral flow test, were treated to a sit-down lunch in a marquee in the gardens of the home. Among them was Councillor Jenny Hannaby, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care on Oxfordshire County Council.

“Elmbrook is a lovely home and I can see how well the staff look after the residents,” she said. “I enjoyed the opening ceremony and meeting everybody. I’m sure Elmbrook Court will be a great asset to the area.”

Elmbrook Court is a purpose-built care home located in Wantage, Oxfordshire, offering 74 individual, private en-suite rooms and providing the highest quality residential, nursing, memory and respite care in a five-star setting.
