Independents’ Day 2012 in Wantage

To raise awareness of Independents’ Day 2012, Wantage & District Chamber of Commerce in partnership with Wantage Town Council, united with South Oxfordshire, Vale of White Horse District Council to encourage residents and visitors of Wantage to share and celebrate what they bought at independent retailers by tweeting a photograph of their purchase and where they bought it from. Followed by #southernoxonindependents

Purchases ranged from a hair colouring treatment in Thame to bike mudguards in Wantage, which spread around the Twittersphere creating interest both online and in local high streets.

Members of the Council’s Economic Development team tracked tweets throughout 4th July and retweeting them to encourage hashtag trending. In Wantage as well as six other Oxfordshire market towns, a prize of a £20 gift voucher to spend at a participating independent retailer will be presented to the person who tweeted the best photo.

Cllr Elaine Ware, Vale of White Horse Cabinet member for Economy, Leisure and Property, said “Local shops make a town lively and diverse, providing a vibrant community spirit. Hopefully, this will remind people that their local stores are not just for Independents’ Day, but for every day of the week”
