A new initiative to drive resource-saving, re-use and recycling is underway in Wantage town centre. The town’s community space, The Mix on Mill Street, has launched its own mini scrapstore Resourcebank.

Jo Harvey, a member of the group Sustainable Wantage which runs The Mix, says: “I am really excited that The Mix is hosting the Resourcebank. I have seen many beautiful creations made by local crafters from items that would otherwise have ended up in landfill or recycling systems. I hope this initiative will inspire people to rethink their rubbish and make the most of this free resource.”

The Mix Resourcebank has all kinds of resources available including glass jars and screw top bottles for jam makers and home brewers, plus fabrics, wools, ribbons, boxes, beads, and juice cartons, for those with craft projects to work on. There is also a file of ideas and instruction sheets for recycled crafts projects to inspire you! It’s available to use on Wednesdays and Saturdays when The Mix is open to the public between 10.30am and 2.30pm (please check the calendar at www.thewantagemix.wordpress.com/calendar as some days The Mix hosts other events). Visitors can choose resources to take home or to a school, or can sit down and make something on the spot (glue, scissors, tape, etc, are available).

Jo adds: “If you have resources to donate or that we could collect on your behalf, please contact me at joharvey100@gmail.com or on 07768 767787.”

The Mix also hosts a programme of workshops including:

Saturday 22nd November 10am-4pm: Juice carton bags. £7 per person. Weave a sturdy bag out of tetrapaks. Contact Jo at joharvey100@gmail.com or on 07768 767787 to book a place.

The Mix (see http://thewantagemix.wordpress.com/) opened following the refurbishment of an empty shop on Mill Street, with much of the work done by local volunteers. Earlier this year a crowdfunder campaign raised more than £3,200 to keep the facility open, thanks to pledges of between £5 and £250 from more than 30 individuals, plus contributions from local council funds.

The Mix is available for hot-desking on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and for local groups and organisations to hire for meetings, and host a range of skill share workshops, fund-raising activities and resource-saving initiatives. Local community groups and organisations interested in hiring The Mix can contact Sustainable Wantage via info.suswantage@gmail.com
