In September 2012 6 local men will embark on a great cycling challenge in loving memory of Joy Whatley. Joy was an amazing woman – loving wife, caring nurse, Mum of 2 and Grandmother of 4 – who tragically lost her battle with ovarian cancer in December 2011. This challenge was initiated by Joy’s sons, Iain and Gareth, who wanted to create something positive out of such a devastating time in their lives. They rounded up a few dedicated friends and ‘The Joyride’ was created.
The Joyriders will be leaving from Wantage on 23rd September 2012 and spend 6 days cycling to Gouex in France. Joy and her husband had recently moved to Gouex and were looking forward to living out thier French retirement dream together. Not one of the boys has cycled since their days as students at King Alfreds Community and Sports College, so this really is quite a challenge. The goal is not only to complete the journey, but also to raise £15,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Training has got off to a great start, with the boys regularly riding 50+ miles in and around Oxfordshire. The fundraising is also going well with over £4000 in sponsorship raised so far. The Joyriders have also been arranging small local events to raise awareness and boost fundraising efforts. These include a bingo night, leg waxing at the Grove Jubilee celebrations and also a night of collecting in the local pubs dressed as French Maids!
The dedication from these men is great, but they still need more sponsors in order to reach their target of £15,000. If you would like to show your support you can visit their donations web page at www.justgiving.com/thejoyride or find them on Facebookwww.facebook.com/thejoyride.
The next Joyride fundraising event is a Family Fun Day at The Greyhound Inn, Letcombe Regis. Come along on Sunday 5th August to show your support and have some fun. Starting at 1pm, there will be a BBQ, a raffle with big prizes, a bouncy castle, face painting, games, cakes and much more.
