Wantage Rotary Celebrates 50 Years
On 22nd February 2013, The Rotary Club of Wantage will celebrate its 50th birthday. The Club was formally established on the same date in 1963, with a Charter Dinner at the Victoria Cross Gallery in Wantage.
The first President was the Reverend E L King, the then Headmaster of King Alfred’s School, and there were 29 members present at the first meeting of the Club.
Over the years, the Club has organised, and will to continue to organise, projects to give support to local organisations and people, and respond to many humanitarian, national and international needs. The Club particularly supports projects for, and with, young people, to address the challenges they face, whilst also contributing to Rotary’s worldwide commitment to eradicate Polio.
Today, the Club is thriving, with a membership of 40 men and women, who generously give their time and talents to serve local and overseas communities.
President Ian Craig says “The Wantage Rotary Club owes many thanks to members past and present, their partners and friends, and the local community, who have helped us to achieve the Rotary ideal of Service to the Community”.
